The choice of construction material for a double diaphragm pump is a fundamental factor in obtaining maximum performance in terms of safety and reliability. Often the choice of an unsuitable material can cause an increase in downtime while decreasing the performance and profitability of the pump.
In order to optimize this selection process, we list four main aspects to consider when choosing the material.
1. Degree of Chemical Compatibility of the AODD pump
The first factor to consider is the degree of chemical compatibility existing between the fluid to be managed and the pump components in contact with it. Those components are:
- Bodies and manifolds
- Membranes
- Spheres
- Ball seats
- O-rings and gaskets
To find out the degree of compatibility, it is possible to consult the DEBEM chemical compatibility guide which provides a compatibility rating between the substance to be transported and the pump materials. The use of chemically compatible materials will decisively increase the performance of the pump.
2. Type of fluid to be transported with the double diaphragm pump
The type of fluid is closely related to the degree of chemical compatibility. In this case, if the need is to transport abrasive substances, it is necessary to choose resistant materials such as steel, for bodies and manifolds and NBR for spheres or membranes. The viscosity of the fluid is also closely linked to the choice of material. The transport of substances with high viscosity requires the use of heavy materials such as stainless steel. The latter, unlike the lighter materials for the spheres, tends not to make them float in the liquid and therefore does not negatively affect the performance flow of the pump. Pumps used in food applications have special requirements in terms of smoothness and gloss depending on the cleaning and sanitation conditions.
3. The environments of use of the AODD pump
AODD pumps work with compressed air and do not require the use of electricity. These pumps can be used safely and reliably even in potentially explosive environments. However, the accumulation of static electricity during the pumping phases could cause some risks, especially in applications for the transport of flammable liquids or within areas with the presence of vapors at risk of ignition. The use of conductive plastic materials with carbon fiber increases the safety level of the pump and makes it particularly suitable for use in potentially explosive environments. In case of outdoor installation, it is advisable to choose metal materials which, compared to plastic materials, have a greater degree of resistance to sunlight or external elements. A further element of choice is dictated by the certifications that the pump must be equipped with (e.g. Atex certification for explosive environments or FDA certification for food).
4. Portability of the double diaphragm pump
In case of using an AODD pump within a portable application, it is necessary to focus on lighter materials that do not prevent it from moving. The weight of the pump is a very important factor especially in the case of use inside underground mines where the AODD pumps are moved manually. In this case, turning to light materials such as plastic or aluminum becomes the best solution.
